As the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections draw near, the political arena is buzzing with the release of election manifestos by major contenders. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, two prominent national parties, have put forth their visions for foreign policy and national security, highlighting contrasting approaches and promises.

1. China:

The BJP’s manifesto underscores the need to accelerate infrastructure development along the Indo-China border while ensuring freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Indian Ocean. On the other hand, the Congress aims to restore the status quo ante on India’s borders with China, emphasizing the importance of areas accessible to both armies.

2. Pakistan and Cross-border Terrorism:

Both parties address the issue of cross-border terrorism differently. The BJP pledges to combat terrorism through international cooperation and consensus-building, while the Congress stresses engagement with Pakistan based on its willingness to end cross-border terrorism.

3. Maldives and Tourism:

The BJP’s manifesto focuses on promoting tourism within India and building sustainable ecotourism, omitting any mention of recent diplomatic tensions with the Maldives. In contrast, the Congress vows to repair relations with the Maldives but provides limited details on tourism reforms.

4. Myanmar:

With regard to Myanmar, the BJP plans to enhance infrastructure along the Indo-Myanmar borders using technological solutions. The Congress emphasizes protecting the political and human rights of Myanmar’s people.

5. Global South:

The BJP aims to position India as the “voice of the Global South” by leveraging its space capabilities and diplomatic outreach. Meanwhile, the Congress emphasizes strengthening India’s role in multilateral institutions and coordinating positions with other Global South countries.

6. Foreign Trade:

Both parties acknowledge the importance of international trade but differ in their approach. The BJP prioritizes boosting connectivity for trade via specific corridors, whereas the Congress vows to conclude long-pending trade negotiations.

7. India’s International Image:

The BJP intends to expand India’s diplomatic network to pursue global interests, while the Congress promises to restore India’s global reputation as a voice of peace and moderation.

These manifestos reflect the divergent strategies of the BJP and Congress on critical foreign policy and national security issues. As voters evaluate these platforms, the debates are expected to intensify, shaping the discourse leading up to the elections.
